Leader of a project GIVE MUSIC A FUTURE – EMCY

EMCY is the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth: a network of over 50 national and international music competitions for young people across Europe. Founded in Brussels in 1970 to develop, coordinate and nurture a system of music competitions, we now cover nearly 30 countries, from Portugal to Russia and from Norway to Macedonia. Every year, thousands of musicians under the age of 25 take part in our competitions, and our projects reach audiences across the continent.

EMCY represents music competitions the world over and keeps its members connected, enabling them to share educational, practical and musical know-how. Through our Quality Standards, we uphold fairness in our competitions, as well as helping new competitions build up their scope, ambitions and results.

We believe that music competitions stimulate passionate musicianship. For many, they’re a first glimpse of performing in public, playing in ensembles, or of breaking out of the orthodox repertoire. They foster a sense of healthy self-assessment, can help conquer nerves, and motivate practice. We believe young people can be inspired by experiencing fresh interpretations and discovering new works, and make new friends from other cultures in the process.

EMCY promotes the prizewinners of its member competitions, arranging tours and concerts for them, and sending them to masterclasses to further their talents. Projects we oversee include the Euroradio Youth Concert: a high-profile concert in a different European city every year, in which some of our most promising prizewinners are accompanied by an orchestra and aired across the continent by the European Broadcasting Union. But the work we undertake is for the benefit of all participants, and all young musicians, everywhere. We don’t think of competitions as the end of the learning process: for us, they’re the beginning.

As a non-profit organisation registered under German Law, EMCY receives funding from the European Commission. We’re run by an international board elected every four years at our General Assemblies, with our office based in Munich (Germany).

The Flying Gorillas

The company was established in 1997 by Susana García and Nigel Warrack and grew out of a desire to create new dance with live music for children that is exciting and fun, performed in a European style, influenced by non-European cultures.

From 1997-2006 we toured various shows in England under the Arts Council England National Touring Programme in Theatres, Schools and unconventional venues including prisons and hospices as well village halls with the National Rural Touring Programme.

We ran several projects in South India and Sri Lanka with the British Council, with former pupils of the late Professor G Sankara Pillai; with Suhruth Nataka Kalari, a rural children's theatre in Kerala; in Nambikkai, a centre for young deaf adults in Tamil Nadu, in rural areas and Dalit tribal zones (formerly known as “untouchables”) with the Trichur School of Drama and also at Eso Natak Shikri in Kolkata (Calcutta).

From 2007-2012 we toured under EU Culture Programme with Travelling people in UK, Romania, Italy, Slovenia, Finland, Turkey and Jordan.

Since 2012 we have been working with children, young people, older people and Travellers in West London (Kensington, Hammersmith and Westminster) under the BIG Reaching Communities Programme.

In all Flying Gorillas shows, the performance is preceded by a workshop in which up to 30 children learn, devise and rehearse the exciting finale. They sit in the front row of the theatre then zoom on stage to perform alongside the professional cast.
